Data Backup is Important - Learn What to Use to Backup

We have them, we use them, and we put way too much trust in them. Computers are great when they work, but what happens when they don't. Maybe your stomach has hit the floor, when you realized that your data files are gone. Now what? What could I have done? What did I do to make it crash? The truth in computers is that they will fail. While the hard drive is not always the culprit, it is most often the one that is overlooked. It stores all of your precious pictures, mp3's, videos, documents, and more. Somehow we think that it is immortal and will always work seamlessly. This is not true, which leads to why backing up data is critically important if you value anything on your system.

For everyone else that wants to avoid the cost of data recovery, there are some solutions that are waiting for you to consider. The ideas below are some commonly used methods for backing up data.

Flash Drives

Data Backup is Important - Learn What to Use to Backup

These devices are not only portable, but are really becoming affordable as well. The average cost (online) for a 16 gigabyte flash drive is around 0.00 USD. Using the simple drag and drop method from one window to another, this is probably the easiest method of backup.

CD's and DVD's

Cheaper than a flash drive per gigabyte, but not as simple or as user friendly, a CD or DVD is a very economical way of backing up data. Most CD/DVD burners come with its own burning software (ex: Nero or Roxio). A CD can hold up to 700 megabytes of data while a single layer DVD can hold 4.7 gigabytes. I would recommend using the RW (rewritable) type CD/DVD's so that you can reuse the media for future backups versus throwing away CD/R's (record once only).

Tapes

This is an expensive route, however it is still the largest way of backing up files when you are into the massive file storage quantities (greater than 500 gigabytes). The advantage of tape backup is scheduling and safe storage. Once the tape is complete with backup routine, it can then be stored or taken off site. Tape does have it's limitations with speed and cost per gigabyte, but for a business, this is usually the best local solution. There are many different types of tape media out there, be sure to shop around with two thoughts in mind: How much do we need to backup now and how much will we need two years from now? Keep long term in mind with tape, because the cost of investment will payoff, but only in the long term over the years to come. Tapes and the drives can easily drive into the ,000.00's for startup.

Removable External Hard Drives

This is a great solution for both residence and small business applications. The first method would be to purchase (aprox. 0.00 USD) an external hard drive. It can be USB or Firewire, depending on your need for speed. This external hard drive can be set to backup your entire system or select files. If the drive doesn't come along with software or a one button touch backup solution, don't panic. If you have Windows Xp, it has a backup software already installed (if you the Home version you will need to install this using the control panel "add/remove programs" and "add/remove Windows components").

The second external hard drive option is to install a hot swappable bay into the computer system. This works much like the external hard drive, except that it is in a casing that can be taken out of the computer (even while it is on) and be transported to elsewhere. Unlike the external Firewire or USB it will not be compatible with another system unless you have a drive bay installed on the other system. This solution is a replacement method for the Tapes as mention previously.

Online Data Backup

My personal favorite type of backup is the kind that you set it and forget it. I have been using Mozy Online data backup for a quite some time and am very pleased. I like the idea of my data automatically backing up to another server over the Internet. It is secure, encrypted, and very dependable. More can be found out about Mozy at http://www.ryansccs.com/free-online-data-backup.html

NOTE

With any backup solution, be sure you are matching at the minimum your data file size. Ex: Your hard drive is 250 gigabytes. Don't buy an external hard drive less than 250 gigabytes. For Flash drives, make sure the total amount of files you plan to put on it doesn't exceed the allowed space. Above all, any data that is backed up is useless unless it is protected. This can be done by taking the backup off site away from the the original or invest in a fire safety box. The smaller boxes work well with tapes, dvd's, cd's, & flash drives. A larger firebox will be needed for external hard drives.

Hard Drive Repair Using Free Software

Contrary to popular belief, if a computer does not boot due to hard drive corruption all data is not lost and the hard drive may even be repairable. There are 2 types of hard drive damage. One is fixable by you and the other requires a professional data recovery facility.

Physical Drive Damage - Physical damage is the worst. Data recovery can only be done by professionals and can cost up to ,500 (sometimes higher). Physical damage usually consists of bad actuator arms, damaged platters or fried controller cards.

Non-Physical Drive Damage - Non-Physical damage (NPD) is what we're going to be discussing in this article. NPD occurs when the operating system's file system (fat or ntfs) gets corrupted due to an improper shutdown (for example). While this damage is may seem really bad (if it's preventing you from booting your PC), it's easily fixable with some software that's already including in any Windows PC and a USB external hard drive enclosure.

Hard Drive Repair Using Free Software

Here are a list of items that you'll need to follow the instructions below:

Another working computer with Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7
Find out what kind of hard drive you have. There are 2 types. SATA (small flat connector) and PATA (a.k.a IDE) which has a connector with about 30 pins. An external USB hard drive enclosure with a connector for the type of drive you're going to be connecting to it (you can grab one of these at BestBuy for about USD).

Please follow the steps below to perform a non-physical repair (software repair) on a non-bootable hard drive.

1. Take the drive out of the computer.
2. Connect the hard drive to the connector on the USB enclosure.
3. Connect a USB cable from the enclosure to the computer that's working.
4. Power on the USB enclosure.
5. An external drive will probably load in your list of available hard drives. You can see this list by opening "My Computer" or "Computer". Take note of the drive letter for the external hard drive.
6. Now it's time to load a program called CHKDSK (Check Disk).
7. Click Start (if you're on Windows XP) or click the Windows globe (on the bottom left for Vista and Windows 7).
8. On Windows XP click RUN, then type CMD. On Windows Vista and 7 type CMD where it says "Search Programs and Files". This will open a black command prompt window.
9. In the command prompt type chkdsk "the drive letter you want to check": /r and press enter. So here is an example chkdsk g: /r then press the enter key.
10. This process can take hours. I've had a few that took days.
11. If this command completes successfully your drive should be repaired enough for you to recover the data from it and you might actually be able to boot from it again.

A word of warning. If your drive ever has any errors on it (bad sectors) it's reached the end of it's life and should be replaced ASAP. You'll be able to see this in the report provided to by the chkdsk command at the end of it's scan.

Testing SCR - How To Test And Check Silicon Controlled Rectifier

Testing SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) can be done by using an analog multi meter or specialize tester (such as the Peak electronic atlas component analyzer) designed to check semiconductor devices easily. SCR can be found in many electronic circuits. Part numbers such as the FOR3G and MCR 100-6 were very common used in computer monitor. Some called SCR as thyristor but in actual fact the word thyristor should not be associated exclusively with the silicon controlled rectifier. It is in fact a general name given to all four layer PNPN devices including the commonly used SCR. The diac, the Triac, and the SCS are the other popular devices belonging to the family of thyristors.

SCR consists of three pin of Gate (G), Anode (A) and Cathode (C). In order to identify the pin out, one must find it from semiconductor data book such the famous Philips ECG master semiconductor replacement guide. The data book will list out the general specification of the SCR such as the volt and ampere. If you want to know more details about a particular SCR, you can always try to search from the internet. Usually the SCR manufacturers will provide the full datasheet for those who want it.

Once you know the pin outs of the G, A and C legs you can begin to test the SCR. If you have the Peak electronic atlas component analyzer tester, what you need to do is to connect the three small clips to each pin of the SCR (any part number will do). The tester will begin to analyze the SCR and prompt you with the display such as "Sensitive or low power thyristor" before it tells you the exact pin outs of G, A and C. After the first test, the tester will eventually show you the answer at the LCD display. Red is Gate, Green is Cathode and Blue is Anode. It is a simple process and you will know the answer in less than 10 seconds. If there is a problem in the SCR, the tester would not be able to show the results instead it shows a shorted reading.

Testing SCR - How To Test And Check Silicon Controlled Rectifier

If you don't have this tester for checking SCR, I'm showing you another easy way on how to test SCR fast. You need an analog meter set to X1 ohm. Place the red probe to the Cathode and black probe to the Anode pin. At this time the meter doesn't show any reading. Now gently move the black probe and touch the Gate pin (the black probe still touching the Anode pin) and you will notice the meter's pointer will kick as shown at the picture (low resistance).

Removing the black probe from the GATE pin (the black probe still touching the Anode pin) you would noticed that the resistance continues to be there (low resistance). This is due to the conduction of SCR as the meter battery is usually able to supply current more than the holding current. If at this stage you removed the black probe from the Anode pin and connect it back, the pointer will dropped back to infinity (high resistance). If the SCR could hold the resistance then the SCR is considered good. If it can't hold then the SCR is faulty.

Conclusion- Practice testing SCR more often to see how's the result like. Try some different part numbers and power SCR-and if the resistance don't hold using X1 ohm, you may try X10 ohm and etc.

How to Fix "Memory Card Error" in SDHC Cards

The SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) card offers immense storage space. The capacity range of a SDHC card starts with 4GB and reaches till 32 GB. They are extensively used with digital cameras as the tremendous storage space allows a user to click high-definition videos and high-resolution pictures. These cards designed fro devices which are compatible with the SDHC 2.00 specification.

However, minor errors in the card can render the stored data inaccessible. The errors occur if the card gets corrupted or damaged. Nevertheless, the card can be made reusable by formatting. The images, videos and audios can then be uploaded again from the updated backup. If the backup is not available to restore the lost data, a memory card recovery software must be used.

Imagine a scenario, where you are traveling overseas and taking tons of pictures everyday. One fine morning when you switch on the camera to view the pictures, it greets you with the following error:

How to Fix "Memory Card Error" in SDHC Cards

"Memory Card Error"

The error makes the card behave in an abrupt manner as it shows the incorrect number of pictures clicked, every time you switch on the camera. For instance, it shows you 350 pictures, and when you see again, it only reflects first 40 pictures.

Cause:

Card corruption or a damaged file system is responsible for the appearance of such an error. A card can get corrupted due to a variety of reasons listed below:

Switching off a camera before an image is completely written to the card Removing the card from a camera while an image is being written off Batteries giving up as files are begin transferred from the camera to a computer Pulling out the card from a card reader while its content are open on a computer Using a card which has not been formatted in the camera Rapidly shooting and deleting images when the card is full

Solution:

Use a card reader to connect the SDHC card with the computer and access the content If the content is still not accessible, format the card in the camera.

Formatting will allow you to click more snaps and videos, but in order to recover the pictures and other audio or video files from the formatted card, you will have to search for a reliable memory card recovery software. A memory card recovery utility comes handy when one has lost or accidentally deleted data. These applications are non-destructive in nature, thus ensuring the recovery of data in original form.

Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery is an easy-to-use software which supports recovery from multiple memory cards such as SD, MMC, SDHC, XD etc. The memory card recovery tool has two different versions for both Windows and Mac users.

Chkdsk Can't Repair FAT32 Volume

FAT32 is supported by Windows XP, 2003, 2000 and Vista (logical drives) and holds cluster values in 32-bit field. This file system can undergo corruption and need Data Recovery. The primary repair option is to run Chkdsk. Windows includes Chkdsk so as to check file system integrity and fix logical errors and can be run through Command Prompt or Recovery Console.

In few of the cases, the Chkdsk utility may unexpectedly quit without curing corruption. Though the corruption exists and volumes are corrupt and inaccessible, but the utility may prompt the correct file system type:

"The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume Serial Number is C408-2213"

Chkdsk Can't Repair FAT32 Volume

However, if we run Chkdsk, without the use of any command-line switches, the volume is reported corrupt and running chkdsk e: command may prompt an error, but the corruption problem may still remain the same:

"The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume Serial Number is C408-2213

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

Reason

This is a specific problem when Boot sector (Primary program to boot the system) is corrupt. The errors lies in the way Chksk handles the Boot sector and its backup copy, which is located at sector 6 of logical drive. Ideally, Chkdsk should make use of the backup copy to offer Data Recovery, but it doesn't do this because the primary boot sector is not located in a bad sector and contains invalid information and at this condition Chkdsk fails to use the backup copy of Boot sector.

Solution

In order to gain file system repair and hence Data Recovery, this is vital that the backup copy must be restored for use. We can make use of DiskProbe utility which can replace the corrupt primary Boot sector information, placed at sector 0 with that of Boot sector copy, placed at sector 6.

·        DiskProbe is a GUI sector editor tool and is operable when the user has local Administrator rights. This is a specialized tool which can repair many of the disk corruption errors, replace the MBR, damaged partition table information and Boot sectors as well. But, viewing the boot sectors as a FAT boot sector through View menu can make the backup copy also corrupt and hence Data Recovery Software remain the only solutions to retrieve the lost data after formatting the drive ( Formatting refreshes the file system)

Data Recovery Software are the powerful applications which can scan the drive for lost data and then recover it. These applications are safe and interactive at Data Recovery and hence are complete to extract data.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery uses the powerful scanning algorithms and offers Data Recovery through graphically rich interface. This Data Recovery Software is compatible with FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS and NTFS5  file systems. Stellar also offers different Data Recovery Software for UNIX, Novell, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.
